SCU Trophy Final. New Wallacefield, Stirling 17/08/08
Fuelled by a pre-match meal supplied by Club Sponsors ‘The Buffet Shop’ Helensburgh’s cricketers travelled to Stirling’s fantastic new cricket ground last Sunday to contest the SCU Trophy Final against Irvine.
Having been asked to bat by the opposition, Burgh’ got off to a bad start losing an early wicket of Elawady for 2. A partnership of 36 between Khan and Williams steadied the ship until Khan lost his wicket for 22 followed quickly by Bowers for 1. Burgh then collapsed to 78 for 6 loosing Williams, Fisher & Lang in quick succession. The innings was then rescued with a partnership of 92 between Sorenson and Steward, until the loss of Sorenson trying to accelerate the score for a fine 56 bought young Stevens to the wicket. Steward eventually fell for 31 leaving the tail to take the score to a creditable 194 all out helped by Jones & Davies. The stalwart veteran Davis remained undefeated on 1 not out as he has been so many times this summer.
Helensburgh came out of the dressing room with the orders of Captain Lang still ringing in their ears but Irvine came out firing with the opening batsmen putting on 17 in the first 4 overs. However Steven's accurate bowling dried up the runs, allowing Fisher to strike 3 times in the next four overs, including the prize wicket of Irvine’s West Indian Professional. As the skies darkened and rain threatened, none of the Irvine batsmen showed the temperament shown earlier by the Burgh’ middle order and wickets began to fall steadily. Steward administered the final rights to the Irvine Innings leaving Burgh’ victors by the wide margin of 80 runs.
The Burgh’ team have forged a tight unit over the second half of the season and the fielders backed up their bowlers with Steward finishing with 3-19, Fisher 3-26, Williams 2-8 & Sorenson capping off his Man of the Match performance with 2-29. This victory put the icing on the cake on what has been a tremendous season for the lads after gaining promotion last year the team could never have dreamt that come September they could finish in the top half of the league and win what is the second biggest cup competition in Scottish Cricket and the clubs history.
The previous day another high flying team tried and failed to penetrate Fortess Helensburgh in the penultimate league fixture of the summer. Glasgow Accies were put into bat by Burgh and yet another fine bowling and fielding performance restricted the away side to just 108 all out. The bowlers attacked with accuracy and the fielders were miserly in not letting the away side settle Sorenson 2-4 Bowers 2-12 Steward 2-46 and Stevens 1-21 all contributing. But Fisher was the pick of the home team’s bowlers going for just 22 runs off his allotted 15 overs.
In reply the Burgh batsmen again lost an early wicket with Khan falling for 2, bringing the in form Williams too the wicket. Williams & Elawady put on another 47 before Elawaddy lost his wicket for 19, leaving the home side on 51 for 2.Wickets then began to fell at regular intervals but with Williams still there the home side were always in control. Williams eventually hit the winning runs, taking his score to 54 not out and the team to a 4 wicket victory.
