On the 19th and 20th June Helensburgh Cricket and Rugby Football Club raised the sum of £2320 for Cancer Relief UK. Other events included an auction, raffle, six-a-side cricket and a BBQ.
Many thanks to all who supported the event by way of donations, sponsorship and help.
06/04/10 - Peter Foster.
With great sadness and deep regret the club has to announce the sad passing of a real club legend, Peter Foster.
Following his bravely fought illness Peter was called to the "Ref's Room" early Sunday morning. A Life member at Ardencaple Peter not only starred in Burgh's rugby front row he was also reknowned for his wicketkeeping and batting skills in the cricket eleven. Peter played for the greens when he returned from University in London, where he played for a wee side called Saracens, until he finally hung the boots up at Ardencaple. He was captain of the first Helensburgh side to grace the National Leagues in the late seventies. The high regard at Helensburgh for Fozzie is a tribute to the former front row legend, a man you wanted to play for rather than against. Many a player would be asked "have a wee word son" at the barrel after the game, as lessons, advice and guidance were freely given - those receiving would have been wise to listen to the free masterclass in forward skills. Peter's humour, which he held to the end, was a hallmark of his character at Ardencaple whether watching rugby or cricket with not many being missed by the subtle asides from the big man.
Our thoughts are with Rhona, Caroline and Julie and the family at this very sad time
Whilst the turn out at last night's AGM wasn't great, all the major matters were sorted. I'll get a brief summary up soon but the main news was the election of new skippers.
The WDCU website has provsional 2010 fixtures up for Divisions 1,2 & 3. I'll wait till they are confirmed before putting them up on the site but Helensburgh are scheduled to start the first month of the Division 1 campaign as follows -
Indoor nets have resumed at the shiney new Lomond School Sports Centre across the road from Ardencaple.
Senior nets take place every Tuesday night from 7:30pm
Junior nets start at 6.30pm on Thursday. Next season the club will be running U15, U10 & U9 sides.
ECB Level 2 coach, Paul Davies, will be coaching at both sessions. If you are interested in attending either night for the first time then Paul can be contacted on 07940 286 908.
NEW PLAYERS OF ANY STANDARD ARE ALWAYS MOST WELCOME!
HCC are delighted to hear that Douglas Willoughby & Calum Thornton have been included in next season's Western District Academy squad. Douglas will be at the U16 level and Calum at U16.
They are the first youth players at the club to be included in the new district squad and it is a great reflection on they and their coaches hard work.
